Biography
Kick-started by hearing early Acid-House on cassettes swapped in school classrooms, Ultuous' passion for music has sculpted his world ever since. After an affair with the early 90's Indie scene ("Prior to it slipping into bland, retro Britpop" he seems at pains to point out) his affection turned back towards house. By that time the electronic sounds he was exposed to had matured enormously ("The likes of Leftfield, Renegade Soundwave and Sven Vath made me wonder what exactly those claiming 'dance music has no soul' were on!!"). Seeing a fresh-faced Sasha in Nottingham's 'Bomb' nightclub was enough to pull him headlong into a dance music obsession.
Equally happy and at home on warm-up duties, playing the headline set or closing a 'night' the following day using a plethora of sounds from his varied musical up-bringing, a typical Ultuous set (if there is such a thing!) can comprise of everything from Deep House to Electro Breaks, underpinned with a flowing, relentless throb of heavy beats and thundering basslines. He enthuses: "These days, it's too easy to download the current crop of 'underground' hits, and assume rights to local hero status. Being behind those decks and having that crowd in front of you is a privilege that can only repaid by going the extra mile, digging a little deeper, locking people into a vibe and pulling out a few surprises along the way!"
2008 really saw Ultuous stamp his mark on the club scene, with frequent sets in some of the most prestigious house music venues in both his current base of Norwich and beyond, playing in the likes of London's Turnmills and on bills with Dave Seaman, Touche and Ricky Stone. 2009 has been a quieter affair to date, with Ultuous being more selective over appointments and concentrating his efforts 'nights and crowds that put the music first'. However, with a new residency just announced for house night Koko, together with continued regular dates at acclaimed night prog/ tech night Radi8 and guest sets at the likes of MAZE, things are looking more exciting than ever!...
